Trees are some of the most important living things on our planet.

Without this oxygen, most life on Earth could not survive.

The process trees use to make oxygen is called photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is a chemical process that happens inside the leaves of a tree.

In simple terms, trees turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen.

Scientists summarize this process with a straightforward chemical equation.

Six molecules of carbon dioxide and six molecules of water produce one sugar molecule and six oxygen molecules.

A single large tree can produce enough oxygen for two people to breathe for an entire year.

Larger and older trees tend to produce more oxygen because they have more leaves.

Tropical rainforests are especially important because they contain enormous numbers of trees.

The Amazon rainforest alone produces about twenty percent of the world's oxygen.

Photosynthesis also helps control the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
