The 1936 Election: A Union in Crisis

# The elections of 1936. The crisis of the union.
The 1936 American elections marked the beginning of a tragedy.
In the context of surviving crises: An economic crisis, related to the downturn that came to us from Germany, and a political crisis caused by a radicalizing electorate from industrial regions, especially the “Red Belt.”
In response, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party decided to form the “Coalition of Patriots,” nominating Alfred Landon for president and Cordell Hull as the vice-presidential candidate.
However, the radical wing of the “Longists,” led by Huey Long, left the coalition and formed the “Union Party,” nominating Long himself for president and his brother Earl Long for vice president.
Due to the weakened position of the conservatives, the Republicans decided to replace their candidate with someone more aligned with their views, choosing Quentin Roosevelt instead of Cordell Hull.
In response, the remaining moderate conservative Democrats left the coalition and formed the “Constitutional Party,” nominating Harry F. Byrd Sr. for president and Burton K. Wheeler for vice president.
With the coalition effectively collapsing, the Republicans and the remaining liberal Democrats decided to dissolve the alliance.
The liberal Democrats formed the “Liberal Party,” nominating Cordell Hull with Henry Wallace, while the Republicans remained with Alfred Landon and Quentin Roosevelt.
The Farmer-Labor Party, meanwhile, nominated the radical socialist Norman Thomas and Daniel Hoan.
After a heated, polarizing campaign that deepened divisions among the population, and events such as: the Harlan Commune the 1936 Washington Massacre the General Strike and others,
Alf Landon, together with Quentin Roosevelt, won the election under the 12th Amendment.
The outgoing president Al Smith congratulated them on their victory.
Let us hope that the situation will begin to calm down...
