Why Do People in the USA Speak English?

The United States is a very big country.

Many people live there.

People in the USA speak English.

But why do they speak English?

Long ago, people came from Europe to America.

Many of these people came from England.

England is a country in Europe.

People from England speak English.

They brought their language to America.

This happened about 400 years ago.

At first, America was not a free country.

England had power over America.

This time is called the colonial period.

During this time, English became very common in America.

In 1776, America became a free and new country.

But people still spoke English.

English was already the main language.

Many other people also came to America later.

They came from places like Italy, Germany, and China.

These people learned English to live and work in America.

Their children grew up speaking English too.

Today, the USA does not have an official language by law.

But English is the most important language there.

Almost all schools in the USA teach in English.

The government also uses English.

TV, radio, and newspapers mostly use English too.

Some people in the USA also speak Spanish.

Many other languages are spoken there as well.

The USA is a country with many languages and cultures.

But English is the language that connects most people there.
