The Day People Walked on the Moon

On July 16, 1969, a big rocket called Apollo 11 left Earth.

Three men were on the rocket: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

The rocket flew very far into space.

After four days, the rocket got close to the Moon.

A small part of the rocket, called the lunar module, went down to the Moon.

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were inside the lunar module.

Michael Collins stayed in the main rocket and waited.

The lunar module landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon.

He said, 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'

Buzz Aldrin came out of the lunar module a little later.

The Moon has no air, so the men wore special suits.

They walked around and looked at the ground.

They took photos and picked up rocks from the Moon.

They also put an American flag on the Moon.

People all over the world watched this on television.

It was a very happy and exciting day for everyone.

After a few hours, the two men went back inside the lunar module.

They flew back up and met Michael Collins in space.

The three men came home safely on July 24, 1969.
