How Humans Have Been Trying to Unlock the Secrets of Mars for Over 200 Years
Mars has fascinated people for thousands of years, but serious scientific study of the planet began in the early 1800s.
In 1830, astronomers Johann Heinrich Mädler and Wilhelm Beer created one of the first detailed maps of Mars using a telescope.
Their map showed dark and light areas on the surface, which scientists tried to explain for many decades after.
In 1877, Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli observed what he called 'canali,' meaning channels or grooves, on the Martian surface.
The word 'canali' was often mistranslated into English as 'canals,' which made many people think intelligent beings had built them.
American astronomer Percival Lowell became very excited by this idea and spent years drawing detailed maps of what he believed were Martian canals.
Lowell even wrote books claiming that a dying civilization on Mars had built the canals to carry water from the polar ice caps.
By the early 1900s, most scientists rejected Lowell's ideas, but Mars still captured the public imagination in books, stories, and later films.
Real progress came in the 1960s when space agencies began sending robotic spacecraft toward Mars for the first time.
In 1965, NASA's Mariner 4 flew past Mars and sent back 22 photographs, showing a cold, dry, and cratered surface with no canals.
These images were a big surprise because they showed that Mars looked much more like the Moon than anyone had expected.
In 1971, Mariner 9 became the first spacecraft to orbit Mars and discovered huge volcanoes and a massive canyon system called Valles Marineris.
The Viking landers arrived on Mars in 1976 and tested the soil for signs of life, but the results were unclear and debated by scientists.
Later missions like Mars Pathfinder, the Mars rovers, and orbiters gathered strong evidence that liquid water once flowed on the planet's surface.
Today, scientists continue to study Mars closely, hoping to answer one of humanity's biggest questions: did life ever exist there?
